How many times have you heard in an interview “So what would you say is your biggest weakness?” which of course is always followed by “well, I’m a perfectionist and so sometimes I try too hard to get it right” yeah yeah blah blah. All that tells you is that they knew that one was coming and that’s the best they could come up with. It doesn’t tell you anything about the real personality of the interviewee or that they are able to think on their feet. We have been using these same generic interview questions for years, so it’s time to shake it up a bit.
Here are the questions you really need to be asking your potential candidates and why…..
If you could be a superhero, who would it be and why?
What a fabulous way to kick of an interview. This question will give you a perspective on their aspirations, help you gauge their sense of humour and how they define success all whilst linking it to the actual job and their core competencies.
Is there life in outer space?
Of course it is something most people have an opinion on, but what you are really looking for is emotional maturity of the candidate based on how well they handle such a surprising question.
How would you spend your first day of work here?
This is their chance to tell you how they would fit in with the company, and how they would make the right first impression.
If you could have a different career, what would it be and why?
This question helps build a three dimensional view of the candidate and can often be a truly surprising answer.
If you caught your boss doing something illegal what would you do?
The reason for this question is clear, you want to know their view on loyalty, trust, honesty, business ethics and responsibility. Sadly it may come across and little bit sneaky!
The important thing to remember is that you are then seeing how your candidate really responds after all how many will have prepared answers to this little lot!
